Yoshi Yarn and Kirby Clay

The Yoshi Yarn Amiibo came with the game.

The Yoshi Yarn Amiibo came with the game.

On Sunday, I got through World 1 of Yoshi's Woolly World. I ate about 10 miles worth of yarn, strung up chomping plants, collected flowers and gems, and rescued a few of my fellow Yoshi. I know people complain about the power of the Wii U, and I'm included in those complaints, but the level of creativity and charm that Nintendo imbues in it's character platform art direction is at an all-time high.

There's even a boss encounter where you slowly unravel his pants until he becomes embarrassed and runs away. The game's aesthetic is so locked in, and the dedication to making everything feel tied to a physical material is spot on. It's hard to imagine Nintendo dialing it back for the smooth-textureless look of a CG animated film. Save that for Mario, I'll keep Yoshi Yarn and Kirby Clay any day.
